Local health
Health care is planned nationally by the LHS and locally by county health boards. Here is who does what where you live.
County health boards
Each county has a health board set up under the Public Services Act 2025. County health boards are run by the counties, not by the LHS. They keep their own functions, budgets and democratic oversight (LHS Act 2026, section 4A). County medical response units also stay county-run (section 4C).
Regional councils
The LHS sets up regional councils, and every county health board has a seat on one. Councils advise on service planning, rural access, public health needs, where staff are needed, and how national and county services fit together (section 4B). We have organised our councils around the five Kings Mail postal regions.
Who to ask
Your county health board is the best place to ask about local services, such as community health education and county medical response units. For LHS hospitals, clinics and practices, use Find a facility.
